In the south west of the southern island there is a National Park of untouched nature that covers 5% of New Zealand's total land mass. In that park is an area called Milford that contains the Milford Sound, which is technically a fjord and not a sound as it is carved out by a glazier.
Now this area and the drive to it is being called the 8th wonder of the world and for a good reason. But this area is also known for being a trickster.. With ever changing weather and conditions leaving visitors frustrated and unable to enjoy the full beauty of the area. It is commonly said that there is roughly a 20% chance of clear weather and you just have to hope for the best and crawl on the bus for a 5 hour drive to the park.
So even getting there is a bit of a struggle and with 2 days of rain in Queenstown I wasn't feeling particular lucky.. And even the locals seemed to try to stop us from getting there in time for the cruise
But Bob the bus driver drove the bus like he had stolen it the night before and little by little the ground seems to rise all around us...
As you can see we were in luck and the clouds parted as we went through a long tunnel revealing blue skies and sunshine.
From this point it was pretty much eyes wide open, jaw hanging low and total silence as we cruised round the fjord taking us all the way out to sea and back in again..
